You arrive at the edge of Vom just before midday.

You walk into the Hairy Giant, and you immediately smell Karrnathi beer and fried food. An old farmer is leaving just as you enter, and he nods good naturedly as he passes. There are no coldfire crystals here, but shutters are open to let in a bit of light from the cold grey day, and a lantern burns behind the bar. Woodsmoke from the hearth against the far wall promises some welcome warmth after your chilly walk.

There are more than a dozen people in here, perhaps 15, including the barkeep (who you think is probably the innkeeper) and a serving wench. Most are farmers, from their look, but there are a few who have the look of those who were still fighting in the war when the treaty was signed. Ducats, particularly, is able to pick out a couple who have that 'look' and who walk or even sit with extreme precision and an economy of motion.

You get the hushed and worried attention of the people nearby. The man you're talking to offers his hand, and says "I'm Reeks. Have a seat." If/when you sit down, he continues. "Just the three of you? Everyone around here feels like that's a dangerous place. Not just bad luck, though there's that too, but dangerous."

Tagor leans in close, and tries to keep his voice down.

"I have to admit, there's probably reason for their worries. We've seen...signs of something going on, probably coming from the Pit. Something bad, that needs to be taken care of before it hurts anyone else.

"There may only be the three of us - but that's why we're looking to find a few more stout hearts."

The man looks at Tagor seriously for a minute. "Alright father. Alright. But I hope you won't think ill of me when I ask how many coins the lady means when she says hire."

He smiles and takes a drink of beer, then he chuckles a bit and shakes his head. "I'm not. I'm worth maybe one. I kept my sword when I left the army though.. most don't, or can't. It's good to hear you care. I'll go."

"Hmm...well, I'm not sure we'd be able to equip any more than two, to tell the truth.

"Which means...two strong Karrnathian plowshares turned to swords, a sharp-eyed lady from the plains, a nimble-fingered gentleman of the city, a man with seven friends in the sky, and a dog to lead us. If Olladra happens to be watching us today, I think that could get the job done." He chuckles, but seems to be earnestly hopeful.

I don't mind giving up a GP or two from whatever we find to go towards their salaries, but I'm pretty much flat broke at this point, so I can't make the decision here because it wouldn't be my gold.

I'm good with two or three. These things sound nasty, so three would be fine with me if a spear or sword doesn't cost too much. Or maybe we could see if Karl Sr. has a spare sword he could loan us.

[ooc] A sword's expensive but a hand axe does 1d6 and is only 1gp. It's a shame I can't buy shields but they cost too much.

Well, looking at the prices, I can swing for an axe - or even a spear! - if we want three 'Fighting Men' with us. And, heck, we might. It sounds scary out here.
